How do you use Dark Half?

Dark Half is a ready-to-use, 1:1 blend of Dark Tung Oil and Citrus or Pine Solvent. This pre-thinned formula is designed for deep penetration into porous surfaces like wood, concrete, and stone, providing a rich, dark matte finish without the need for additional mixing.

  • Surface Preparation:
    • Temperature: Ensure your work area is above 50°F (10°C) for proper oil flow and curing.
    • Cleanliness: The surface must be free of dust, debris, and grime.
    • Porosity: Test the surface with a small amount of water; if it beads, you must sand or strip existing finishes. If sanding, use up to 220-grit to keep the wood pores open.
    • Staining: Avoid wood conditioners or oil-based stains. If you desire additional color, use a water- or alcohol-based stain before applying Dark Half.
  • The Application Process:
    • Initial Coats: Spread Dark Half onto the surface using a brush, rag, or foam roller. Let the oil sit and soak in.
    • Saturation: Continue to apply oil until the wood is fully saturated. You will know the wood is saturated when the oil continues to pool on the surface after 40 minutes rather than soaking in.
    • Removing Excess: Once saturated, use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe away all excess oil. This is a critical step to prevent the finish from becoming tacky or uneven.
    • Building the Finish: Most projects require 3–5 coats for maximum protection. We recommend letting the first coat rest overnight, then applying the final 1–2 coats the following day.
  • Curing:
    • The Timeline: Dark Half reaches a partial cure in 7–15 days and a full cure in 30 days.
    • Care During Cure: During the first 10 days, keep the surface free of standing liquids and heavy objects. Proper airflow is essential for the oil to harden (polymerize); do not cover the surface with plastic or non-breathable materials.
